Originally from the lovely region in France, they are a beloved and ancient breed, one of the oldest in fact - but it is the unique Dogue de Bordeaux characteristics that makes them stand out amongst the rest. They have gained popularity around the world and are beloved for the charming but mischievous personality. Shall we look at what exactly makes the Dogue de Bordeaux so special?
Important Characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux
Right from the start people have admired the Dogue de Bordeaux’s protective instincts that kick in when faced with any potential danger. This is thought to be due to their extensive history of working as a hunting companion or guard dog for their families, but may also simply be due to their large build that they are able to bravely defend their loved ones. This devotion is prevalent in the natural Dogue de Bordeaux personality which makes them a vigilant and dependable choice.
Other favourable characteristic of the Dogue de Bordeaux is their kind and affectionate character, especially when they are around their loved ones. Some people can feel intimidated or scared when they are approached by this large and imposing dog, but there is no need to feel like this. Owners of this breed can attest to the fact that you would be hard-pushed to find a more loving and gentle dog. They are keen to show this side too and so would be a wonderful companion for families with children.
To balance these positive aspects of the Dogue de Bordeaux, they also have a few negative traits which are their tendencies to become stubborn, territorial and less-friendly when they are in the company of other canines - especially if they are male. This can mean they create a hostile atmosphere when living alongside other dogs, sometimes resulting in some minor fights. But this can be easily avoided by introducing them at an early age to increase their experience in socialisation.
A more favourable Dogue de Bordeaux quality is their sluggish and relaxed demeanour, especially when compared to a lot of more active dog breeds. A lot of larger dogs will need you to dedicate a few hours a day to making sure they exercise and get rid of all of their pent up energy, but this is not the case for the Dogue de Bordeaux who are often happy with 30 minutes. Don’t assume this means they are an easy dog to own though, as Dogues are often challenging to manage and train while they are young.
One last trait of the Dogue de Bordeaux is the general aesthetic and appearance of the breed. Dogues are impressive to look at, with their broad shoulders of up to 27 inches and overall weight of between 99 and 110 pounds. The unique short-haired fawn and mahogany coat is what further sets the Dogue apart.
